1 out of 3 people are involved in a drunk driving accident in their lifetime. I developed BACsafe, a portable key lock that allows for your loved ones to get home safe. BACsafe has a built in breathalyzer that is able to determine if an individual's blood alcohol content (BAC) is over the legal limit. If alcohol is detected, the user's keys will remain locked for another hour until he/she are safe to drive home. The product costs under $30 to develop and targets families and groups of friends that have a designated driver.
Breadboard Demo
This demo of BACsafe shows what happens if the user is not under the influence. The user must blow into the MQ-3 sensor to gather the BAC reading. I developed an algorithm that converts the voltage reading into BAC and, in this situation, the lock (in blue) deactivates allow the user to remove their keys.
